Puff the Magic Dragon

Don’t let the staid cover of this book fool you: the illustrations for this retelling of the classic song are both beautiful and eccentric, like the lyrics themselves. (A CD with the music is included if your toddler, like mine, complains when you attempt to sing.) James initially couldn’t decide whether or not he liked Puff — he was put off by Puff’s crying when Jackie Paper grows up — but the illustrator wisely added a happy ending in the form of a little girl arriving to play with Puff and Puff cheers up. Giggle factor: not applicable. Adult enjoyment: depends on how nostalgic you are. Illustrations: four jelly jars, plus extra points for the CD.
