The Knight and the Dragon

OK, so there’s a degree to which Tomie de Paola is passé, but The Knight and the Dragon is a really funny book. Written in the same vein as one of James’ and my all-time favorites, The Paper Bag Princess, it features an inexperienced knight and a tender young dragon who decide they have to fight each another, presumably to polish off their resumés. They read up on “Armor Building” and “The Art of Tail Swishing,” but honestly they just don’t get it. Royal librarian to the rescue! And a great surprise ending. Giggle factor: high. Adult enjoyment: likely. Illustrations: three jelly jars (but most kids would give it five as they’re less jaded than myself when it comes the work of Tomie de Paola).
