Anno’s Counting Book

Similar in style to Mitsumasa Anno‘s Alphabet and Counting House, Anno’s Counting Book uses simple, wordless yet clever illustrations to teach elementary concepts. “0” is a snowy landscape without any houses; “1” has one house, one fir tree, one bird, one fox, one adult, one child; and so on till “12.” James’ particularly likes seeing a construction site get plotted out for “7”; the house is then built in ”8.” Only downside: the paperback version is very flimsy. We have two copies and both are disintegrating. Giggle factor: not applicable. Adult enjoyment: kinda fun, even as a grown up, to find all the new and different things to count in these elegant landscapes. Illustrations: three jelly jars.
