There Was an Old Monster

Another splashy book by the Emberley family (creators of Chicken Little), There Was an Old Monster is a delightfully inventive and deliciously disgusting twist on the folk song about the old lady who swallowed a fly. Only in this case, the monster jams a lizard into his gizzard, eats a jackal while he cackles, and so on, but you can sing it to the same tune, or download the Emberleys singing it here. And James loves looking for the tick that made the monster sick, which appears on every page along with all the ants, lizards, bears, bats, etc. Giggle factor: absolutely, with an added ICK factor & surprise ending to boot. Adult enjoyment: what’s not to like? But I think James’ dad and I are divided on this point. Illustrations: five jelly jars.
