Gone Fishing

By the creator of Gone WildDavid McLiman‘s Gone Fishing: Ocean Life by the Numbers presents stylized pictures of sea creatures shaped into numerals in bold, black-and-blue illustrations. James was initially confused by why each numeral had only one sea animal (“But there’s only ONE tiger tail seahorse! Not FIVE!”), and, to be honest, much of the text is clearly intended for an older audience, eager to memorize facts about the ocean. But Gone Fishing is still beautifully inventive and works well for number recognition, on the same level as other basic counting books. School Library Journal: “The black silhouetted numbers are sinuous and compelling in this unique and imaginative description of the dangers facing ocean life today.” Giggle factor: not applicable. Adult enjoyment: if you like art. Illustrations: five jelly jars.
