Wave

By the same author-illustrator as The ZooSuzy Lee‘s Wave is fantastic beach reading for children, or for children who just want to go to the beach. In it, a mother arrives at the beach with her daughter, who proceeds to tease the waves until a really, really big one crashes over her. This isn’t scary, however. It’s actually pretty hysterical, to the point that James rolls around on the floor, giggling. For me, the seagulls are the best part: Lee has perfectly captured seagull behavior in her luminous acrylic and charcoal illustrations. This book is short and sweet, a lovely snapshot of sea, shore, sand, shells, seagulls, and childhood. Giggle factor: high. Adult enjoyment: did you ever play in the ocean? Illustrations: five jelly jars.
