The Night Before Christmas

Robert Sabuda‘s re-envisioning of the classic Night Before Christmas is one of the most stunning and elaborate pop-up books I personally have ever seen. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, this is a gorgeous book, with scampering reindeer, a Santa who actually goes up the chimney, and a fabulous climactic scene of intricate houses and bridges buried under snow, with Santa flying overhead. Each spread includes an additional pop-up hidden under a flap. Opening the flaps to reveal yet more marvels seems to be James’ favorite part of the book. James literally gasps in awe, even with multiple retellings. This book represents Sabuda at his best. Giggle factor: not applicable; has a wow factor instead. Adult enjoyment: absolutely. Illustrations: far more than just five jelly jars.
