ABC is for Circus

Patrick Hruby‘s ABC is for Circus may be a chunky board book, but it’s not just for babies. While not as informative about the circus as Who Put the B in the Ballyhoo? it’s still a wonderful introduction to circus vocabulary, with gorgeous, stylized drawings that place a heavy emphasis on line. A is for acrobats, B is for Big Top, C is for Calliope, and so on. My only complaint is that X is for X Ray. Personally I’ve never seen an X Ray in a circus, but I admit, X is hard. Giggle factor: moderate. Adult enjoyment: if you like art; perhaps higher if you like the artwork of Charley Harper, as it’s a clear influence. See a review of Charley Harper’s ABC here. Illustrations: five jelly jars.
